Following up on an earlier post where we talked about PGA golfer Tony Finau giving zero fucks about dislocating his ankle while celebrating a hole-in-one, popping it right back into place like it was no big deal (and then going on to a top-1o finish in The Masters that weekend, here we have another post about a badass PGA tour member who frankly doesn’t give a shit.
That golfer is Patrick Reed. The new most hated man on the tour. And not for reasons like Tiger Woods back in the day because he was miles ahead of everyone else. However, he is pretty darn good, as evident by his Masters victory. He has become the villain of the tour because of his attitude.
How Patrick Reed Doesn’t Give a Fuck
We love this guy. He absolutely doesn’t care about who he steps on. He just wants to win and doesn’t care about being liked along the way. Deadspin had a long article about him recently that goes into detail his path from a high schooler, through college, and to his present-day badassery. It’s worth a read in full (linked above), but here are the cliff notes on how he became the most hated man in golf.
He entered college at the age of 17, which may explain some of his troubles fitting in and getting along with his teammates. Maybe he was just too young to adjust to being around older teammates and the college lifestyle. He joined the golf team at Georgia and immediately made an impact on the course as a freshman. It didn’t come without controversy off the course, however, as he was dismissed from the team after his first season.
Those around the program keep it close to the vest why he was let go, despite being such a promising star, but there are signs of personality problems. Not to mention some drunken antics that got him in the police blotter. Not a good look for any college athlete, let alone for someone underage.
The personality clashes he had all stemmed from his competitive drive. It manifested itself in an arrogance about him, wanting to beat the pants off even his teammates. He practiced away from the team and basically alienated himself from his teammates.
There’s also accusations of cheating, hitting a ball that wasn’t his that just happened to be much closer to the fairway than his errant shot. There are also allegations of theft, with some items missing from the Georgia locker room. Again, those around the program are pretty mum about what went on. But it’s easy to read between the lines that they weren’t sad to see him go.
He continued his career at Augusta State, closer to home. The same problems followed him there, where his brash personality alienated him from teammates despite the unprecedented success he brought to the program. Along with national championship trophies, his time at Augusta was also littered with suspensions.
His antics didn’t stop at college. Here he is bringing his own Happy Gilmore language to the PGA Tour, muttering to himself “Nice fucking three putt, you fucking faggot” after missing a putt, audible on the broadcast and forcing the commentators to apologize to viewers.
Personally, we love Patrick Reed’s “take no prisoners” attitude on the tour. With all these fresh-faced, likable young stars on the tour, it’s a breath of fresh air to have someone with a little attitude out there. We hope to see much more of him for years to come!
